The Masters’ Program “Veterinary Medicine in the Coastal Environment” offers to professionals the proper skills to act as agents who elaborate actions on public and educational policies, sustainability, and environmental awareness. It comprises aspects of animal production; animal health and its solid interface with public health; and, mainly, environmental conservation, leading to the concept of “One Health”. Above all, the Masters’ Program provides the required attributes for teaching and research.

The Program’s research lines describe the consequences of the actions of a past of regional exploration, identify the present status of health, and propose actions to improve production and health, with implications in the future, particularly in similar regions.

To this end, the Program studies the health and the production aspects of pastoral, urban, coastal, and forestry animal populations, in the light of their climate and socioeconomic characteristics. Notably, the Program’s research projects aim to place these aspects in the context of human health. The Program also studies the consequences of the regional industrialization on the preservation of terrestrial and marine areas of the coastal environment.

PECULIARITIES OF ANIMAL DISEASES IN THE COASTAL ENVIRONMENT

Description:
The coastal biome covers a diversity of Sociobiology peculiar and, in this respect, veterinarians have a paramount acting in maintaining the animal and human health. Its urban environment presents attributes common to non-coastal cities, but also has special features when summertime situations predominate. On such occasions, the demand for veterinary services is larger and diverse. In addition, transient animals from different regions, can interfere with the health condition of the local population, including the human. In other hand, the coastal environment also includes rural properties with populations of different terrestrial and aquatic species, and wildlife.

Thus, this line of research seeks a portrait of the present, finding the facts regarding the health of animal populations in the coastal environment.

To this end, projects are developed in that their thematic permeates the identification of characteristics related to animal diseases, their particularities relating to the diversity and, mainly, the seasonal aspects of coastal biome and their influence in maintaining human health.

CONSEQUENCES OF FARM AND INDUSTRIAL EXPLIOTATION ON COASTAL ENVIRONMENT
Description:
In addition to the industrial park of Cubatao, important metallurgical center on a regional scale, and the Santos port complex, the Metropolitan Region of “Baixada Santista”, features activities to support export trade, caused by the proximity of the port. The region stands out in the exploration of the marine environment, with the production and exportation of fish, as well as for being, in their extensive environmental preservation areas, reservoir of important specimens of fauna and flora. However, the industrial exploitation and the port activities contribute to the spread of contaminants that lead to the degradation of this biome. Similarly, the intense occupation of the coastal plain that, over the years, increased gradually towards the cliffs, hills, and mangrove areas, speeds up the processes of erosion and of irregular occupation of the Atlantic forest, compromising the conservation of this biome.

Thus, this line of research seeks a portrait of the consequences of past actions in the reality of the coastal environment.

To this end, projects are developed to detect contaminants arising from population, industrial, and port occupancy, as well as their monitor, and the identification of the resulting damage to the health of aquatic and terrestrial animal populations.

CHALLENGES OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION IN THE COASTAL ENVIRONMENT
Description:
To generate knowledge and technology to the productive sector, leading to gains in production efficiency, adding values to the marketing of products, and promoting agribusiness development with environmental protection and social responsibility, are conscious demands of the society in which it is imperative the veterinarian’s action. In this respect, the coastal environment involves diversified animal creations, either related to food production and proper use of fishing resources or focused on breeding of pet animals.

Thus, in this line of research, actions are sought for a future. Near and distant future. As well as their applications in similar environments.

To this end, projects are developed towards the technological improvement to promote agribusiness, focused on sustainability, environmental conservation, and food security, and to stimulate entrepreneurship, with the improvement of productive processes able to generate income and promote social inclusion, in the climate conditions of the coastal biome.
